SHORT FILM “THE JOURNEY” WINS SOPHIA STUDENT AWARD 2019
A Viagem”, by Henrique Lopes was considered the Best Experimental Short Film in the Sophia Student Awards 2019, an award from the Portuguese Film Academy, on a night in which ETIC_Algarve was doubly awarded.
The award ceremony took place Thursday, December 12, at the Pharmacy Museum in Lisbon.
“Have you ever killed yourself? No? I have.” – this is the teaser of “A Viagem”, the short film that has depression and suicide as its theme, written and directed by Henriques Lopes, a student in the Directing, Film and TV 17/19 class and who this year joins the ETIC_Algarve team as an Assistant in the Video area.
Born and raised in the Algarve, Henrique Lopes showed interest in the world of cinema from an early age. He joined ETIC_Algarve in 2017 and since then he has been participating in several projects associated with various areas. With many other projects in mind for the future, his main goal is to make good cinema in Portuguese.
This was the 6th edition of the Sophia Student Award and the fourth year that ETIC_Algarve was nominated, however it was the first time that it brought home a (double) award!
The student of Communication and Multimedia Design 18/20, Tanya Gomes was distinguished with the 2nd place ex aequo in the challenge launched for the creation of the graphic identity of the event.
The Sophia Student Awards were created as a way to encourage and reward future filmmakers, as well as stimulate educational institutions and their teaching staff to share the results of the work developed in a school context. The works awarded with this prize are included in the following categories: Fiction, Documentary, Animation, Experimental, and Poster.
The three winners in each of the categories (twelve in total) will compete for yet another selection, by another jury, which in February will announce the four finalists who will be present at the Sophia Awards Gala.
“The Journey” had already won 1st Place in the Fiction/Drama Category of the 2019 edition of the Ficsam Festival – International Film and Mental Health Festival.
This distinction is an immense pride for ETIC_Algarve and, of course, we can’t help but congratulate the whole production team and the main character, Tiago Leal, student of Performing Arts – Acting at Escola Secundária Tomás Cabreira, who was 16 years old during the shooting.
