The documentary “Son of Art”, created, produced and directed by the class of Communication Design and Multimedia 14/16 of ETIC_Algarve was nominated for the category “Documentary” of the 3rd edition of the Student Sophia Awards 2016.
Taking as its starting point a look at the Algarve urban artist Menau, known for his sometimes controversial urban interventions, the documentary also ends up reflecting the contradictions of modern society, also addressing the role that Art plays in a society increasingly alienated from its daily life.
This audiovisual project was guided by teacher Ricardo Flôxo and counted on the precious contributions of teachers Patrício Faísca and Luís Rocha.
This nomination is seen “with great pride” by the director of ETIC_Algarve Nuno Ribeiro, not only for the nomination itself, but also because “it reflects the serious, creative and interventive work that we have been developing throughout this short existence in the Algarve (6 years), a period during which 2 projects of our students were nominated, This fact is not to be underestimated considering that we are the only school south of the river Tagus with such a strong commitment to the audiovisual area, with all the limitations that come with being located in a periphery”.
The Sophia Student Awards, established by the Portuguese Film Academy, aim to “encourage and motivate future filmmakers, as well as stimulate educational institutions and their faculty” and is open to all schools that have in their educational offer courses related to film and audiovisual.
The promoters of the contest received more than 88 proposals from schools all over the country, and thirteen schools saw their students’ projects chosen, in the different categories – “Fiction”, “Documentary”, “Animation”, and “Experimental”.
The awards ceremony will be on December 7th, at Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon, and will be preceded by the presentation of all the nominated films.”
